Familiar with the Agricultural Practice – Greenhouse? Here’s How it Relates to You and I

This article was inspired by one of our climate fellows who asked a question on our fellows group. This is the question he asked;

“I am curios as to why the name greenhouse was chosen for the gases. Why are they called the greenhouse gases? Then He added this.

“Note: i am not just asking for the definition”..

Great question.

But in other to explain why the name ‘GREENHOUSE” was chosen for the greenhouse gases, we must first try to understand the phenomena of the greenhouse.

Now lets attempt to answer this question by describing in the first place A greenhouse.

A GREENHOUSE (an agricultural practice) is sort of an glass house, used to create an uninterrupted atmosphere where plants can grow in a regulated atmosphere. 

The goal is for the plants within to retain all of its nutrients and exclude unexpected eternal weather changes which could affect growth. In other words these plants grow in the best way possible doing as well as they ought to do.

The glass trap sunlight keeping the insides warm: that is retaining a regulated temperature suitable for the plants inside.

Now this phenomena i explained above that happens for the plants within a greenhouse is likened to a term called *the greenhouse effect* which the four main gasses resident in our atmosphere provide for our earth.
These gases – Nitrogen, Carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour are the four gasses which regulate the temperature of our earth by trapping the heat of the sun helping living things in the earth live in a balanced neutral way and Maintaining a livable temperature and like I said during my lecture – helping humans within the earth not get too hot or too cold, too dizzy or too fast – in other words retaining a balance.

These gases are the reasons why we humans and our ecosystem exist and live well and like I said during my class- these gasses by nature are meant to exist in a balance (more gases shouldn’t be added) so that they can carry in their natural activities. That’s why the gasses are called the GREENHOUSE gasses because they have the effect that  an agricultural greenhouse has (on plants within it) to the inhabitants of the earth.

She’s an alumna of Abia State University, Nigeria, The Lagos Business School, University of Delaware, USA, European Energy Institute and The Florence School of Regulation, Italy.
