We’ve talked about the CLIMATE, The CLIMATE SYSTEMS and a DISRUPTION. Now what is causing this disruption and altering the climate system? It’s called the GREENHOUSE EFFECT.
Before we learn about the Green house Effect, you must know the GREENHOUSE GASES. Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat. They let sunlight pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the atmosphere.
The main greenhouse gases are:
Water vapor
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Nitrous oxide
Water Vapour: This is water in gas form. Like steam above a boiling pot or water evaporating from a lake or water that form dew. This water evaporates back to the atmosphere & Forms cloud &rains back on earth. WP retains heat causing a warmth.
Carbon dioxide: It’s made up of carbon and oxygen and exists around us naturally. It comes from decaying and living organisms. It’s released when burning fossil fuels like coal and oil. It’s the biggest promoter of climate change.
Methane: It’s made up of carbon and hydrogen. It’s a normal gas released from raising cattle, rice agriculture and coal mining. It traps heat in the atmosphere and is the second biggest contributor to #ClimateChange.
Nitrous Oxide: Is a natural part of the Nitrogen cycle. It’s made from bacteria from the soil and ocean. It’s released from power factories, plant fertilizers. It damages the ozone layer.
And important thing to note is that these greenhouse gases are meant to exist in a balance by nature. But the activities of man has disrupted this natural balance leading to global warming (an increase in the earths’s atmosphere) which is advancing climate change.
The major cause of climate change is due to the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil, natural gas etc by man. When we use products such as diesel, petrol, kerosene, natural gas, we add more carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere. Now carbon dioxide existent in the atmosphere traps heat therein just the way a typical greenhouse gas traps heat on the inside. This is why carbon dioxide is known as a “greenhouse gas.”
Greenhouse gases act like a blanket around the planet, keeping heat from leaving the atmosphere. Thereby making the earth warm. This phenomena also known as the greenhouse effect causes global warming which is now making our climate to change.

Under Glory’s leadership, RETTI recently launched the RETTI Virtual University and introduced their eight short ONLINE COURSES to assist people wanting to get into the energy sector especially renewables.
Glory is the pioneer of the Climate Leadership Fellowship and the Africa Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders (AFYEL) which are both investing into a new generation of climate and energy leaders across Africa to attain a zero carbon world through raising soldiers to aid the transition to clean energy and a sustainable environment.
Glory recently received the Florence School of Regulation’s – Lights on #Women #Award as one of four women out of 150 women from 64 countries. This award will granted her a featured interview with the FSR and a scholarship to study the course – #Electric #Vehicles (EV); a Power Sector Perspective and expand her knowledge about how EVs, #Charging #Infrastructure and the #V2X (Vehicle to Everything) concept will change the face of electricity and transportation.
Glory has published four books to promote the knowledge of climate change and renewable energy; Something is happening; Our world is changing; Understanding the Basics of Climate Change– for Secondary Schools – The Concept and Science of Climate Change – for the general adult public, A short thriller story – The Year Ran Mad – which depicts the impact of climate change on livelihood for Primary schools and The Girl who saw tomorrow, a short novel for secondary school – http://bit.ly/rettiM.
